The Kiondo

The Kiondo is a traditional handwoven handbag made from sisal and leather trimmings. It’s famous among the Kikuyu and Kamba tribes in Kenya. The Kiondo has recently become a fashion statement and no longer a shamba/market bag. The Kiondo has gained a lot of recognition both locally and internationally, making it an effortlessly stylish fashion piece. It is amazingly trendy, no one ever thought the Kiondo would such on high demand.

I first fell in love with the Kiondo late last year when I saw a picture of Lupita Nyong’o carrying it and looking glamorous.I remember how the picture spur a debate on Fashion Watch. The panel was convinced that the Kiondo will be a huge trend in 2016 on the other hand some of the panelists thought we Kenyans do not promote our own creation, which is kinda true. No offense but, a good number of people would rather go for fake designer bags than custom made bags in Kenya.

However, it is not entirely our fault. As far as taste and preference goes, some of these custom made items are too expensive to afford. We are torn between basic needs and luxuries. The government would do so much good in promoting local talents, widening the local markets for local items, giving out incentives and lowering the tax on these items.

Maybe then the prices will be reasonable and we would all embrace more of our creations. We also as Kenyans have a role to play. Let’s buy more of our own items, let’s wear our designs, let’s promote the local market.

I am grateful for markets like Maasai Market and Kariokor Market that have been there for as long as I can remember. One can buy a lot of things from accessories to crafts with just 1000Ksh (10$). Of course if your bargaining game is good.
Head over to Maasai Market and get yourself a Kiondo among other beautiful items being sold there. You’ll love the prices so much you’ll feel like buying the whole market.

I styled my Kiondo with a white t-shirt, black skater skirt and Maasai (Gladiator) sandals.

T-shirt ~ Gikomba Mkt.
Skater Skirt ~ Toi Mkt.
Sandals and Kiondo ~ Maasai Mkt.
Cateye Sunnies ~ Dubois Rd.
Necklace ~ DIY.

Thank you for stopping by. Have a great week, Toodles!
